5. Egg and Sperm Collection
When the eggs have matured, they are collected using a needle along with a sperm sample from the male.
The eggs and the sperm sample are now placed in a incubater to fertilize in a controlled enviroment.

Most frequent questions and answers
IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization. The Sperm and the Egg are cultured outside the body, incubated in glass dishes in the early stages of the treatments. That is why it is called IVF. The name stuck on even though we do the cultures in plastic dishes these days. The fertilized embryo is then transferred back into the uterus for developing the baby.
The success rate of IVF treatment depend primarily on the woman’s age, number and quality of eggs recovered, quality of sperm, fertilization rate, number of embryos transferred, quality of the embryos, stage of the embryo transferred, endometrial thickness , morphology , receptivity, luteal support , the quality of the culture system in the lab, and the care given by the fertility centre. So the success rate depends on variety of factors.
We advice IVF, in anyone who has been trying for a pregnancy for one year or more. If she is 39 years or older we do not wait for more than six months. IVF has greater advantage compared to other treatments because we aspirate the egg, identify it under the microscope, inseminate with the sperm and confirm fertilization and transfer it into the uterine cavity. Beyond that step the fertility doctor has not much control on what happens to the embryo. In treatments like IUI we do not see the egg ( only the follicle, not the egg on scan), we do not know when ovulation has occurred, we do not know if the fallopian tube has picked up the egg, whether it met the sperm, whether it got fertilized or if it reached the uterine cavity. So there are lots of unknowns. In IVF all these ifs and buts are eliminated. So one year (12 ovulatory cycles) is a good test for pregnancy.
Painful injections, redness at the site of injections are of minor consequence. Most dreaded complication of and IVF treatment cycle is excessive ovarian stimulation and the ovaries produce more than ten eggs. This can happen if the woman has Polycystic ovaries or a mistakenly higher dose of injection is given. Ovarian Hyper stimulation Syndrome (OHSS) when it occurs, the ovaries enlarge to two to four times its normal size, become painful, can easily be felt on examining the abdomen. They produce large amount of fluid causing abdominal distention, difficulty in breathing, and pain . This fluid is drawn from the blood so the blood becomes more concentrated
Losing lots of salts and fluid can cause blood clotting inside the blood vessels. Loss of salt from the blood can also cause disturbed kidney function and kidney failure. If unrecognized and untreated this can result can be dangerous to one’s health.
Can one choose the sex of the baby? Technically it is possible by looking at the chromosomes of the embryo before transfer. But in India it is prohibited by law. Because of the fetocide of female babies the government made it punishable by fine and imprisonment. So Miracle never determines the sex of the embryo or the baby before it is born. For us whether it is a female or a male baby, as far as it is normal and healthy that is all that matters.
With advance in technology we can grow the embryos in the laboratory for up to 5 days. (Blastocysts). Because only a healthy embryo grows to this stage ( 40-60%) the pregnancy rates are better on transferring these embryos. That is the reason one tends to transfer only one or in exceptional cases two embryos. So we do selective single embryo transfer (SSET). Multiple pregnancy, twins, triplets or any higher order are failure of treatment for us at Miracle. Some clinic do embryo reduction. At Miracle we do not do it. We are here to make a baby , not to kill / take away a baby.
